Well, It’s been a huge 24 hrs in Australian politics with the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd being somewhat pushed out of the top job by factions within the Australian Labor Party, and being replaced by his deputy, Julia Gillard.
Gillard becomes Australia’s 27th Prime Minister, and the first female to hold the top job.
I won’t express my own opinion of this event, but will say I had the pleasure of photographing Kevin Rudd while he was PM on a few news jobs.
On one of the jobs I was the sole photographer (pool photographer) during the PM’s visit to the Sydney Children’s Hospital just days before Christmas in 2009. Again, in early 2010 I was welcomed into Kirribilli House to cover a reception for the Australian and Pakistan cricket teams.
On both occasions I found Rudd to be genuine, warm and very human in that he seemed like a “normal bloke”.
I’ve never been one to be star struck, and have met and photographed many celebs and politicians, but I will say he is one person I am happy to have shook hands with and shared some idle chit chat.

Thought I would do a little post with some of the news work I’ve been doing over the past week or so.
The big news was the return of solo round-the-world sailor Jessica Watson, after her record breaking 210 days at sea, unassisted, she became the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe. Also in the headlines was the latest scandal to rock the NSW state Labor party. After a Channel 7 reporter broke a story about transport minister David Campbell’s private visits to a men’s bathhouse, the minister resigned, forcing Premier Kristina Keneally to again weather a storm of criticism from the press and the public about the seemingly never-ending troubles in the NSW state Labor party. Superstar female sportsperson Ellyse Perry who excels at both soccer and cricket, came home with the World Twenty20 trophy, and Cate Blanchett got behind the NSW Premier Kristina Keneally for the announcement of a new arts precinct for Sydney. I’m back home from Vancouver and finally have had a decent sleep after what was easily one of the best experiences of my time so far with a camera. I shot 18,175 photos in the three weeks I spent in Vancouver and really wished I had used the pedometer that was in our media kit “goodies bag”, because I reckon the amount of walking I did would be right up there. I also spent the equivalent of about three whole days on buses, I even fell asleep with a half full cup of coffee in my hand on one bus trip. I ate dinner on only four occasions during the games and only once at a reasonable hour prior to midnight. I met and worked alongside some incredible photographer’s while at the games and it was a humbling experience to be around such great sports photographers, all of whom were at the same time some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met, who included Robert Beck of Sports Illustrated, David G McIntyre, Jon Gaede, Erich Schlegal, Klaas Jan van der Weij, Peter Blakeman, Jeff Crow, Delly Carr, and Courtney Crow, to name a few. (and not forgetting my mates Sean Radich and Jake McBride).

I have been pretty busy lately doing a lot more news photography. The past month or so has provided some pretty interesting news assignments for me, whilst working as a casual for Australian Associated Press. I have photographed the Prime Minister twice, the previous PM, and also the new leader of the federal opposition. I’ve shot the Australian and Pakistan cricket teams, and taken on some challenging assignments such as shooting the New Years Eve festivities in Sydney. I have been working toward shooting more news for a bit over a year now, trying to shift away from the tight niche of action sports. The Christmas/New year Break gave me a chance to prove myself as a lot of the full time shooters were away on holidays.

Today while doing news photography I was covering the French climber Alain Robert’s appearance at the Downing Centre courts in Sydney. Robert who calls himself “the real Spiderman”, yesterday climbed the 41 storey Royal Bank of Scotland building in Sydney’s central business district without any ropes or assistance. He faced a charge of risking the safety of another, and was fined $750 by the magistrate. Robert has climbed over 80 structures around the world and was last in the headlines in Australia when he climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2003.
What I found most impressive about Robert, aside from his incredible climbing ability, was the outfit which he wore to his court appearance. He turned up in a bright red leather jacket and black leather trousers which both had “Mellencamp” emblazoned on them! I’m assuming that’s John Cougar? He looked more like a rock star about to go onstage. Priceless!
